What to Do and What to Pack: London England

I’ve been to London five times now, and every trip feels like a new adventure. This city has layers—history, culture, food, and character around every corner. Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, here’s a guide to making the most of London anytime of year: what to do, where to go, how to get around, and what to pack.

I tend to fly in and out of London when I go to Europe. At first it was to visit with my friend Matt 12 years ago when I went for the first time to visit my Central America travel buddies in their home towns. And now I go because I love it and my now best friend Rim lives there too.

1. Take a Walk Along the Thames

One of my favorite ways to see the city is by walking along the river. Start at Tower Bridge and stroll west toward Westminster. Along the way, you’ll pass Borough Market, the Tate Modern, and the London Eye. It’s a mix of old and new, and the views are always changing.

2. Visit the Victoria and Albert Museum

This museum is a treasure trove of art and design. From fashion to sculpture, there’s something for everyone. Admission is free, and they often have special exhibitions or displays that make repeat visits worthwhile.

3. Explore Camden Market

Camden has a vibe all its own—alternative, eclectic, and full of energy. The market is a maze of stalls, vintage shops, and quirky boutiques. It’s a great place to spend a few hours wandering and discovering new finds.

4. Catch a West End Show

London’s theater scene is world-class. Whether you’re into musicals, drama, or something offbeat, there’s always something playing. Check out the National Theatre or the Royal Court Theatre if you’re looking for something a little different from the typical tourist shows.

5. Visit the Sky Garden

For stunning views of the city without the crowds, the Sky Garden is a great choice. It’s free to visit, but you’ll need to book a time slot in advance. The indoor garden is lush, and the panoramic views of the Shard, the Gherkin, and the river are unbeatable.

6. Stroll Through Hyde Park

Hyde Park is beautiful in any season. Whether you’re enjoying spring blooms, summer picnics, autumn leaves, or a crisp winter walk, it’s a peaceful spot to relax, have a coffee, or rent a bike and explore.

7. Visit the Tower of London

If you’re into history, the Tower of London is a must-see. You can tour the medieval castle, see the Crown Jewels, and learn about London’s rich past.

8. Explore Notting Hill

Notting Hill is charming year-round with its colorful houses and independent shops. Portobello Road Market is fun for antiques and vintage finds, and even a casual stroll through the neighborhood is enjoyable.

9. Take a Day Trip to Oxford

A day trip from London to Oxford is perfect for history lovers and architecture fans (and Harry Potter Fans). Just an hour away, you can wander the world-famous university, stroll cobblestone streets, explore museums, and relax in charming cafes. It’s a quick escape into classic English charm.

10. Visit Babylon Park

If you’re traveling with kids or just want something fun and different, Babylon Park in Camden is worth a stop. It’s the UK’s only fully indoor theme park, complete with an underground rollercoaster and alien-themed attractions.

How to Get Around London

  • Oyster Card or Contactless Payment: Use an Oyster card or contactless payment (like a debit or credit card) to pay for travel on the Tube, buses, and trains. It’s the most cost-effective and convenient way to get around.

  • Walking: London is a very walkable city, and sometimes it’s the best way to discover hidden gems.

  • Bikes: Santander Cycles (aka “Boris Bikes”) are available throughout the city. They’re a fun way to explore and get some exercise.

  • Taxis and Ride-Sharing: Black cabs are iconic, but Uber and other ride-sharing services are widely available and reliable.

What to Pack for London

London weather can vary at any time of year, so I recommend packing for flexibility:

  • Layers: Bring a mix of T-shirts, long-sleeve shirts, sweaters, and a light jacket.

  • Waterproof Jacket: A lightweight, waterproof jacket is useful year-round.

  • Comfortable Shoes: You’ll be doing a lot of walking, so bring comfortable shoes, ideally water-resistant.

  • Umbrella: A small, portable umbrella is always handy for unexpected rain.

  • Power Bank: Keep your phone charged while navigating the city or taking photos.

  • Travel Adapter: UK plugs are unique, so make sure you have the right adapter for your electronics.
