7 Spooky Things to do this October
Calgary, known for its stunning Rocky Mountain backdrop and vibrant cultural scene, transforms into a haven for all things spooky and spectacular come Halloween. I love Halloween. There is something about the season of Fall that invokes cozy vibes, and I love going to a pumpkin patch, cooking with pumpkins, watching Halloweentown (no scary movies for me this year), and doing all the cute fall things with friends and a significant other.
Here are some things to do, some of which I’m already doing to do in the next week:
Ghost Tours
Join one of the many ghost tours that guide you through haunted sites and eerie tales of the city's past. Discover the hidden stories of paranormal encounters and uncover the mysteries that linger in the shadows. Heritage Park is hosting a Ghouls Night Out (Adults Night), and they have all the spooky stories from their historical spot, without the jump scares.
Haunted Houses
If you're looking for spine-tingling thrills, Calgary's haunted houses are sure to deliver. Visit haunted attractions like ScreamFest, where you'll be subjected to a heart-pounding experience filled with terrifying monsters, chilling mazes, and more. It used to be my annual tradition, but I’ve since taken a break from the adrenaline scarefest that is Screamfest. I know people that love it, here is where you buy tickets.
Pumpkin Patches
Get into the Halloween spirit by visiting a local pumpkin patch. Not only can you pick the perfect pumpkin to carve into a jack-o'-lantern, but many pumpkin patches also offer additional activities like corn mazes, hayrides, and petting zoos. Some notable options include the Cobb's Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch or Butterfield Acres. I tend to go to Calgary Farmyard every year so I get to hang out with the animals, go on the jumping pillows (even though yes I’m too old), and new this year go down the tube slide (absolutely terrifying as not a child). I believe its closed already for the season with the fresh snow.
Costume Contests
Halloween isn't complete without dressing up in your spookiest or most creative costume. Many bars, restaurants, and clubs in Calgary host costume contests with fantastic prizes. Check out local event listings to find the perfect costume contest for you.
Halloween Parties
Calgary boasts a bustling nightlife scene, and Halloween is the perfect time to enjoy it. Numerous bars and clubs host Halloween-themed parties with DJs, themed decorations, and costume contests. From the Beltline to Inglewood, you're sure to find a party that suits your style, I’ve put together a few that are on Friday.
Movie Marathons
For those who prefer a more laid-back Halloween, consider hosting or attending a movie marathon with friends or family. It doesn’t have to be scary, I’m very for Halloweentown marathons rather than the Saw movies, but its up to you on your scare factor. Pop some popcorn, dim the lights, and indulge in a night of classic horror films or binge-watch a chilling TV series.
Family-Friendly Events
Families can find plenty of Halloween fun too. From kid-friendly haunted houses to community events like "Trunk or Treat," where children can safely collect candy from decorated car trunks, there are numerous options for parents and kids to celebrate together. Local BIA’s usually have a pretty good program for kids which get businesses involved in handing out candy.
Calgary comes alive with spooktacular events and activities during Halloween. Whether you're into haunted houses, costume parties, or simply enjoying a delicious spooky treat, there's something for everyone in this vibrant city. So, put on your favorite costume, embrace the Halloween spirit, and get ready for a howling good time in Cowtown.
