10 DIY’s to try this Weekend

It’s coming up a long weekend here, and if you are getting excited about new projects this spring and summer season, I have put together a few new DIY projects that you can try this weekend that range from an hour or two to a full weekend project:

Accent Wall: Create a focal point in a room by painting one wall with a bold colour or applying wallpaper. It's a great way to add visual interest and personality to a space. If you are handy with tools, try out box molding, or try out a DIY Slat wall. I did mine in a day and I love what visual interest it has brought to my living room space.

Floating Shelves: Install floating shelves on an empty wall to display your favourite books, plants, or decor items. It's an easy and cost-effective way to add functional storage and decorate your home. You can either buy these, or you can DIY these using these wall brackets from Amazon and some 2x10 or 2x8 planks. Here is a good tutorial.

Upcycled Furniture: Give an old piece of furniture a new life by repainting, refinishing, or reupholstering it. You can transform a dated piece into a stylish and unique focal point for your room. It’s still spring time, and warm outside, so chances are you can find a local garage sale by searching Kijiji, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace etc. and find a new piece of furniture under $10 to refinish.

Garden Planter: Build your own garden planter using wood or recycled materials. It's a fun and rewarding DIY project that can add greenery and charm to your outdoor space. I’ve just built two, and now that I’ve done it once, I’ve realized you can send a lot less $$, use reclaimed wood (or thinner than a 2x4) and then fill it with all the greenery you want.

Custom Headboard: Create a custom headboard for your bed using plywood, fabric, and foam. You can choose a design that complements your bedroom decor and adds a touch of elegance to your sleeping space. It will frame where you sleep and make your sleeping space more polished.

DIY Artwork: Get creative and make your own artwork using canvas, paint, and other materials. You can create abstract art, landscape paintings, or even a gallery wall to add a personal touch to your home. I personally love the compound/spackle art still, and here is a good DIY from Olive and June.

Backsplash: Install a backsplash in your kitchen or bathroom using tiles, peel-and-stick options, or even reclaimed wood. It's a great way to protect your walls from splashes while adding a stylish and functional element to your space. Wall Pops has some great options for both backsplashes and then also floor tiles. If you have a small bathroom, this might also be a fun project to redo the flooring!

Customized Organization: Create customized storage solutions for your home using shelves, hooks, and baskets. You can design a personalized organization system for your entryway, laundry room, or garage to keep everything tidy and organized. The local home hardware store will have inexpensive hobby board or white hardboard that can be an easy way to add shelves to your existing closet.

Outdoor Fire Pit: Build an outdoor fire pit in your backyard using bricks or stones. It's a perfect addition for gatherings and provides a cozy ambiance for outdoor entertaining. If you have a patio and cannot build a fire pit, Sterno has a great smokeless fire in a can, and there are plenty of DIY’s you can do that uses that and fits on your table top. Here is a great example of a few ideas.

Lighting Fixtures: Create your own unique lighting fixtures using pendant lights, lampshades, and puck lighting from Amazon. Custom lighting can add a statement piece to any room and create a warm and inviting atmosphere. I’m going to use a frame that I found at a garage sale to create my own, and VeryLiv has a great tutorial.

There are plenty of fun DIY’s that you can do this weekend, or add to your project list. Many of these are renter friendly, or might just be a conversation with your landlord. A couple of well placed nail gun nails can help secure non-weight bearing pieces of trim for a feature wall, or a stud finder to find the best place to secure your brackets. Many landlords are open to changes being made if it increases the value of the place, or if you are able to fill and paint the wall after you move out. Garage Sales are going to be great opportunities to find inexpensive projects that can become great features in your home as well! If you’re trying any of these, make sure you follow the proper instructions and make sure it works (and is allowed) for your space.

Happy DIY-ing!
