June Inspirations
June and I have mixed feelings about each other. June is a tough month for losses in our family, but June also has the start of summer, the start of warm nights and new growth in the garden. It’s patio nights, camping weekends and long walks in the evenings. May is usually lovely, albeit rainy, but June is the start of summer in my mind, dating all the way back to grade school when it meant that school was out and I was home free and could do what I wanted. I am very lucky that my job is flexible, and so June still means more freedom, long weekends and traditions with friends. Here is what is inspiring me this June season and what I cannot wait for.
I’ve been swapping out my pussy willows with blooming branches. They are expensive, however a few key pieces liven up your space. If you don’t want to spend the money, you can always look at a faux display, Michael’s has a few great options.
I found a brown version of these braided sandals at my last trip to Target, and I love them. they are very popular right now, and I love how comfy they are with a chunky heel. You can find them from many retailers, but Target, The Bay, The Shoe Company and Steve Madden all have inexpensive options for you to try this trend.
This white linen dress with the front cut out is a dream. I looked at this trend and hated the cut-out, but after trying on a dress that was the right size, I realized it actually highlights a waist and makes it look smaller. Here is one from Banana Republic, but here is one from Joe Fresh that has a dress with side cut-outs as well that is a beautiful green. Old Navy has an inexpensive version in a blue denim-type fabric.
It’s gardening season! I absolutely love growing things, and my new planters on the patio have given me so much joy. If you're interested, I’ve written more about planning out my garden and what I’m growing here. I love filling my space with flowers and then growing vegetables where possible. I’m also looking at cucumbers, peas, cucomelons, radishes and carrots.
Tis the season for paddle boards. I cannot wait to get on the water, but I’ve been spending time near the water until I’ve been cleared by the physio to get back out on my board.
I love movies in the park, and on my patio, I have a white wall space that I’ve going to use for nighttime movies in the heat of summer so I’m arranging everything so I can easily do that as soon as the weather is warm enough at night.
I am my grandmother’s granddaughter and my mother’s daughter and I love brass candlesticks. I have an obsession with garage sales and have been going on the weekends even before I was off crutches. I love finding vintage finds; anything brass and gold has been coming home with me. Here is my garage sale locator for Calgary, but I know there are similar sites in Canada and the US to track down what is happening on the weekend. Estate sales are more common in the US, but definitely worth looking at!
Stampede season is fast approaching, and part of what I love about it is all the Western-inspired outfits throughout the week. I’ve been eyeing this shirt which would go great with jean shorts, and my gold cowboy boots (which I picked up on Amazon).
Finally, it’s the outdoor market season with the first one kicking off this weekend on 4th Street with Lilac Festival. There are so many going on all summer, and even if you don’t want to spend a lot of money, they are a fun outdoors thing to do and happen all over!
